Yolanda M Sommerkamp

Yolanda Miriam Sommerkamp, age 94, of Rochester passed away November 29, 2012. Yolanda was born July 22, 1918 in Chiclayo, Peru the daughter of Dr. Lorenzo Orrego Vargas & Juana Ramos Aranda.She grew up in Lima where she completed nursing training at the British American hospital in Lima, Peru.She trained and worked as a nurse in the Peruvian Navy Military, and interned in her native country of Peru. She came to the United States in 1952 where she worked at the Kahler Hospital and then Methodist Hospital.Yolanda met her husband Detlef Sommerkamp while working in Rochester and they married on February 15, 1955; and have been blessed with 57 years of marriage. In 1962 Yolanda started her career with the Mayo Clinic in the Urology department. She retired in 1982 after 20 years of service at Mayo Clinic. She and her husband retired at the same time where they continued to reside in Rochester and enjoyed spending their winters in their winter home in Pompano Beach Florida.Yolanda enjoyed traveling to Peru and spending time with her many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, Detlef Sommerkamp of Rochester and many nieces and nephews in both the US and Peru.She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Lorenzo. No formal services are planned at this time, and her cremains will be buried in her home country of Peru.
