Stephen Barna

ROCHESTER - Stephen Barna, 90, died on Friday, October 25, 2013 at Cottagewood Senior Living in Rochester. Stephen was born in Binghamton, NY on January 12, 1923 to Vasil and Anna (Pecka) Barna. He married Margaret Hamar on August 28, 1948 at St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church in Binghamton, NY. Margaret died on February 8, 2010. Stephen worked at IBM for 32 years. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Rochester Retirees Club, IBM Quarter Century Club, and Calvary Episcopal Church. He was proud of his service to America as a veteran of World War II and is honored with a paving stone at the Soldiers Field Memorial in Rochester. He enjoyed discussing his Carpatho-Rusyn heritage, sharing the cultural aspects his life on Clinton Street in Binghamton, NY. Stephens passion was spending time with his family.He was the greeter and entertainment of his young grandchildren after school hours.As years passed, he would surprise family and friends with a quick joke or by singing in his native Rusyn language.His positive outlook brought smiles to the faces of those he met. His strength, love and dedication have been inspirational to his children, grandchildren and those lucky to have known him. Stephen is survived by three children and their spouses, Stephen (Mary) Barna, of Rochester, Thomas (Mary) Barna, of Rochester, and Lori (Thomas) Mickelson, of Rochester; three grandchildren, Brooke Mickelson, of Rochester, Taylor Mickelson, of Rochester, and Benjamin Barna, of Brooklyn, NY; and a sister, Suzanna Dougherty, of Binghamton, NY. Stephen is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents; and four siblings, Mary Kozak, John Barney, John Demyan, and Margaret Barney Kispaugh. A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 111 3rd Ave. SW, with Father Nick Mezacapa officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church.
