Shirley M. Nelson

Shirley Marie Hellerud was born on January 10, 1940 in Rushford, MN to Gerhardt and Alpha (Treangen) Hellerud. She died peacefully at The Homestead in Rochester on April 5, 2017. Shirley graduated from Rochester High School. She married the love of her life Gale Nelson on November 1, 1958. The couple lived in Stewartville and moved to Rochester in October of 1999. Shirley was a CNA for Madonna Towers (being the first employee in history employed with them for 37 years) retiring in December of 2014. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed traveling, shopping and family casino trips. She was lovingly referred to as Grandma Boo. Survivors include two daughters, Carrie Nelson of Rochester and Sheila Nelson (John Rath) of Eyota; three grandchildren, Chad Rathbun, Jason (Chrisna) Rathbun and Nicole Rathbun; five great grandchildren, Bennett, Brynn, Kyler, Greyson and Korbin; three brothers, Roger Hellerud of Orlando, FL, Gordon (Marilyn) Hellerud of Rochester and David (Sara) Hellerud of Byron and two sisters, Sandra Engelking of Rochester and Gloria Hellerud of Waconia, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gale in 2000 and one brother, Richard. Remembrance services for Shirley M. Nelson, 77, of Rochester will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes with Andrea Buck officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
