Rochester- A Memorial Service for Ruth Cocker, age 90 will be held at 11:00A.M. This Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester with Rev. Jay Rowland Officiating. Burial of the Cremains will be in the spring at Pilot Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes on Friday evening from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. and then at the church on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.. Memorials are requested for Alzheimer research or to Seasons Hospice.Ruth Whiting was born August 27, 1920 in Olmsted County near Marion to Harold and Jessie (Peck) Whiting. She and her family moved into Rochester in 1923. She attended Grade School in Rochester and Graduated from Rochester High School. As a young girl she sold vegetables and flowers on the street corners.Ruth married Hugh R. Cocker in Rochester on June 20, 1943. Her husband worked for Whitings Nursery and later was the Gardener for the Rochester Parks Department. Ruth also worked for Whitings during Holidays and busy times. Ruth and her husband were longtime members of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. She was very active in the community serving as a 4-H leader for over 25 years. She served on several boards in numerous garden and floral clubs, including the Rochester Garden Club, National Orchid and Lilly Clubs just to name a few. She and her husband traveled extensively for flower shows and meetings. She truly had a "Green Thumb".Ruth passed away on Wednesday evening , January 12th at Seasons Hospice.Ruth is survived by her husband; six daughters, Carolyn Jorgensen of Eyota, MN, Randa Lou Cocker Ferreira (Lucirdes) of St. Paul, MN, Kathy Jan Spurger (Allen) of Giddings, TX, Anita Gail Montgomery (Ed) of Broomfield, CO, Beverly Ann Gilbertson of Elko, NV, and Cynthia Sue Millar of Pine Island, MN; 13 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Don Whiting; and a sister, Jennie Ann Meyer
