Ruby Jean (Phenix) Strehlow, 90, of Rochester, passed away peacefully Friday, July 21, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Ruby was born on May 10, 1927, in the town of Larimore, North Dakota. Ruby and her family moved to Marshall, Minnesota, where she attended grade school in the District #9 one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1945 and moved to Rochester, Minnesota. She married Orville Strehlow on November 23, 1946, in Rochester. They were married 70 years and together had two children. She worked at the Mayo Clinic, owned a restaurant with her husband, taught Sunday School, was a homemaker, assisted and taught handicapped and disabled children at Kellogg Junior and Mayo Senior High School, worked with youth in a volunteer program for fifteen years at Methodist Hospital, and seasonal work at Seneca. She enjoyed square and round dancing, playing cards, traveling, camping, and volunteering. As a couple, Ruby and Orville hosted tour buses for Square Dance groups traveling across the United States. Her ability to express her creativity could be seen in her art, crafts, pottery and ceramics, sewing, painting, and needlework. Her generosity was felt by everyone who knew her, as she would often make gifts for all family and friends. Later in life, she was very involved with the Red Hats community here in Rochester. Her family is thankful for all the memories they have made and shared over the years, most importantly, receiving the tightest of hugs from her. She will be loved and in her familys hearts forever. She is survived by her husband, Orville, her sister, Lois, her daughter, Cinda, her son, Ricky (spouse Jean), and her four grandchildren, Ben, Jenna (spouse Luke), Lily, and Gavin. In lieu of flowers, Ruby requested that memorials be donated to Rochester Central Lutheran School (RCLS). There will be a memorial service at 12:00 PM on Sunday, August 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 222 6th AVE SW, Rochester, MN 55902. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until time of the service.
