Dr. Robert M. Twedt 1924 - 2017 Robert Twedt was born on July 4, 1924 in Rochester, Minnesota where he was raised by parents Nels and Stella Twedt alongside his younger sister Nancy. He decided early on to study science--something that set the trajectory for the rest of his life. Robert left Rochester in 1942 to study at the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. Continuing his studies, Robert pursued biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Colorado where he was awarded a Master of Science and a PhD. Soon thereafter Robert served as research fellow and assistant scientist for the U of M and as Professor of Biology for the University of Detroit. In 1967, Robert began his career as a microbiologist for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration where he was promoted to serve as chief for both the Bacterial Physiology and Virulence Assessment branches of the FDA. This work focused on the relationships between microbiology and food with an overarching concern about public safety in America. As a lifelong learner, Robert retired from his government position in 1990, settling into the bucolic surround of Kentucky. He embraced his love for the Catholic Church, trains and walking each day in nature. Robert studied spirituality, the genealogy of his ancestor's lineage and, in 2002, published a memoir about growing up in Rochester during the 1930's. Upon the death of his beloved wife Patricia Brumback-Twedt, Robert returned to his boyhood home. He lived his final years at River Bend Senior Living Center where he still walked a mile everyday and cherished the loving support of its professional staff. Robert was known throughout his long life for both his mind and his heart. He was a devoted scientist and an impeccable gentleman, ever kind to all he met. Robert Twedt, age 93, died on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Season's Hospice in Rochester, Minnesota. He is survived by his sister Nancy Randall; nieces Elisa Carlson and Cynde Randall; nephew David Randall; and step-children Ed Counts, Darryl Counts (Deanna), Julie Kirk (Curtis), Faith Clifton (Marc), Nokie Brumback and John Brumback (Valerie).
