Robert Olsen

Robert ("Bob") Dean Olsen, 78, of Rochester, MN died at home Sunday, March 18, 2018 surrounded by loving family after a two-year courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born March 19, 1939 to Ordean and Ann (Nelson) Olsen in Fargo, ND. The family moved to Montevideo, MN where Bob grew up, was active in sports and earned his Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy after attending Officer Candidate School. He served his country with pride for 12 years and was a Vietnam veteran. In 1982, he moved to Rochester, MN and worked as a radiation therapist for the Mayo Clinic. On July 10, 1988 he married Loya Brink LaVoi and they enjoyed life together for the next 29 years. He was an avid outdoorsman with passions for golfing, hunting, fly fishing, archery, and trap shooting. He also dearly loved spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Loya of Rochester, MN; his children, Marissa (David) Wachter of Bainbridge Island, WA and Mark (Kaitlyn) Olsen of Mill Valley, CA; six grandchildren, Josie, Ryan, Luke, Maya, Anna and Sam; two brothers, Richard (Gayle) Olsen of Rochester, MN and Stephen (Linda) Olsen of Willmar, MN; and a sister, Mary Vomacka of Willmar, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, David and Mark; and his sister, Shirley. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Bethel Lutheran Church where Bob was a member (810 3rd Avenue SE) with the Reverend Dr. Norman Wahl officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Homes and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will take place at a later date at Wildwood Cemetery in Cohasset, MN. Memorials may be made to Mayo Clinic Cancer Research, The First Tee golf program, or a charity of your choice.
