Robert Bruce Keller passed away at Season's Hospice House on April 22 due to complications of Parkinson's disease. He had lived with the disease for twelve years. Bob was born on June 27, 1938, in Lititz, Pennsylvania, to John and Ruth Keller. He grew up in Lancaster County, PA, graduating from high school with honors. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating with a degree in physics and a membership in Phi Beta Kappa. While in college, he met his future wife, Sarah, when he was a senior and she, a freshman. After graduation, Bob moved to Southern California to work - first at Douglas Aircraft, then at IBM to start what became a three-decade career in that company. While looking through an alumni magazine, Bob saw that Sarah was also in Southern California, teaching first grade. This led to a dinner date, an engagement, and their wedding on July 2, 1966. While in Los Angeles, their first son, John, was born. Four years after moving to San Jose, their second son, Daniel, was born. The family's last move brought them to Rochester, MN, in 1975. During his professional career with IBM, Bob worked on many computer technology projects at a time of rapid growth in the industry. This included iterations of the IBM personal computer, as well as new types of software that the PC made possible. At the time Bob retired, his title was Senior Advisory Planner. Bob enjoyed play and discovery throughout his life. In retirement his continued to pursue his interests in computer technology and learning French. Bob had a lifelong passion for music and photography. He attended concerts with Sarah, and took great pride in restoring old family photos. He passed on to his sons his love of movies, reading, and science fiction, as well as his inquisitive nature. He enjoyed tinkering and experimenting with technology, and encouraged and guided both of his sons when they became interested in computers. Bob also passed on his appreciation for craftsmanship, that even a simple repair was worth doing right. Family and friends were always important to Bob. He and his family regularly made trips to visit extended family in Lititz, PA and Cincinnati, OH. He enjoyed meeting friends for coffee, as well as at the Y for fitness activities. Bob's grandchildren know him as their beloved Opa. John's family lives in Paris but keeps close via weekly video chats, as well as visits to Rochester each year. Bob and Sarah were also able to travel to Paris for important family events. Dan's family lives close by, so Bob and Sarah have been able to attend the grandchildren's special events and activities, and enjoy regular playdates together. Bob will be remembered for his kindness, good humor, integrity, and loyalty to family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; sons, John (Heather) and Dan (Sara); his sister; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and an infant sister. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be determined by the ability to travel and gather. Those who wish to give memorial gifts are suggested to donate to Parkinson's research.
