A veteran of WWII, Bob served in the 29th Air Force Tactical Air Command, participating in 5 major European battles, including the Omaha Beach Invasion on D-Day. Using the G.I. Bill, he earned a Master's Degree from the Medical College of Augusta Georgia in 1949. He was the first graduate from their new program in Medical Illustration. As a free-lance medical illustrator in the Twin Cities from 1949-1971, he sketched operations for the University of Minnesota Hospital residents, many famous surgeons and physicians of the time, specializing in cardiac abnormalities. Also, he did continual work for Modern Medicine Publications. In 1971 he joined the Mayo Clinic staff and became the Head of section for medical graphics, using his talents and foresights to further the development of the department. Bob loved spending time outdoors, especially on Lake Superior and at Ann's summer home in Northern Michigan. One of his favorite past times in younger years was to sail his boat "Charlie" on Lakes Pepin and Superior, enthusiastically sharing this passion with family and friends. Bob was a voracious reader and loved learning. His kindness and generosity to family, friends and strangers was legendary. His humility masked his genius and the fact that he was a true Renaissance man. A gentleman and a scholar, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and a Celebration of Bob's Life beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes.
