Richard was a strong soul who was diagnosed with cancer ten years ago.He learned to schedule treatments around his life and not his life around cancer. Richard was born just a few minutes before his twin brother Robert, on April 28th, 1937 to Kenneth and Olive Tiede. They were later joined by their brother Ronnie. They were born in Rochester, and he spent the majority of his life there.Growing up, he was active in many youth organizations, and both he and his brother obtained the rank of Eagle Scout by the age of 16. Richard graduated from Rochester High School in 1955, and furthered his education at Dunwoody Institute, graduating in 1957.Shortly afterwards, he joined I.B.M., where he worked for 32 years, before retiring in 1992.He was a member of the I.B.M. Club and present member of the I.B.M. Retirement Club. In 1962, he joined the Minnesota National Guard where he proudly served until he was honorably discharged in 1968 with the rank of Staff Sargent. In 1964, he was united in marriage to Carol Ann (Smith), daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Smith of St. Charles. He remained lovingly steadfast in his devotion to her throughout their nearly fifty years of marriage.Early on, they would welcome two sons into the world, which has grown into the family they cherish today. In 1973, the family moved to Lake Zumbro, where they became very involved in the Rochester Waterski Show and life on the lake.Richard held many positions in the water ski club including President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Safety Director. He was instrumental in helping design and building the present ski jump. With unwavering dedication, and great passion, Richard enriched his community. He was elected to serve on the Oronoco Township for over 16 years as Treasurer. He became a Mason of Rochester Lodge #21 in 1970.He was active in the Shrine, and was honored as Shriner of the Year in 2010.He enjoyed the Zagala's Car Club, and could often be found at local parades escorting various officials in his yellow Model A car.Richard was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Oronoco. He served as Deacon and Elder, and was responsible for the renovation of the church in 2003; the same year in which he was diagnosed with cancer. Richard had many interests, including hockey, baseball, and fishing. He enjoyed working on projects around the house, and was the ultimate handy man.He had a gift for gab, and could often be found visiting with friends and strangers alike; both of whom would walk away with a smile on their face. More than anything, he was extremely devoted to his family, and had an endless capacity to share hislove. His greatest treasure was his Grandchildren, and there was nothing he wouldn't do for them.Hecould often be found at their school functions and hockey games, escorting his granddaughters to church, or hosting a sleepover. This love was reciprocal, and his eight Grandchildren feel he was the best Grandpa in the world. Richard is survived by his loving wife Carol Ann; three sons, Tim Vaughn of Forest Lake, Thomas (Michelle) of Zumbro Falls, and Scott (Kathleen) of Rochester; two brothers, Robert (De) of Stone Lake, WI . And Ronald (Nancy) of Rochester; Aunts Opal Weis, Agnes Tiede, and Eunice Tiede, and uncle Clayton; and his beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Alexandra, Hannah, Charlie, Mia, Ava, Ike and Max. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the family and friends that have offered support over the years.A special acknowledgment to Dr. Timothy Hobday; not only did you provide the highest quality care to Richard, but did so with compassion and dignity. You will always hold a special place in our hearts. Also, a special thank-you to the great staff on Gonda 10 East (Sherry, Go Packers!), and to all the Patti's, Amy, and Ruby Ann of Seasons Hospice. The family prefers memorials to the Presbyterian Church of Oronoco, or to the Shriner's Hospital.
