Richard Miles Regedal

March 1, 1927 — February 2, 2012

ROCHESTER:Richard Miles Regedal died Thursday morning February 2, 2012of cardiac arrest at St. Marys Hospital.He was born in Beltrami, Minnesota on March 1, 1927 and lived there for the next 18 years.Growing up in this rural community played a large part in who he was and what he may have accomplished during his lifetime.After high school, he served in the Army from 1945 through 1946, and then completed his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota. Richard was married on October 27, 1951, to Delores Roloff, a nurse/instructor at St. Marys School of Nursing.For the next four years, he taught in Madison and St. James, Minnesota.He became interested in the areas of counseling and guidance, and went to the University of Colorado to extend his skill in that area, graduating with a Master of Arts degree. He was recruited for the large Kern High School District in Bakersfield, CA in 1956 and worked in several of the district schools, primarily in the latter twenty years as a school psychologist.After his early retirement, he continued to work as a consultant in the specially funded program for five years. Dick enjoyed working and serving as an officer in the school-related organizations, Phi Delta Kappa, California Teacher's Association, and California Association of School Psychologists.He was a life member of California Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. In the community, he was a member and officer in the Lutheran Church of Prayer, and served on the Lutheran Social Services committee in assisting the needy for over 30 years.He was also a founding member of California Living Museum (CALM). Dick's hobbies included hunting, fishing, and traveling.He and Delores were lucky in beginning their travels early with more adventurous trips to Africa, the Amazon, Easter Island, Galapagos, four trips to Russia (including the Soviet Far East), and continuing in their later years.They also enjoyed generally good health. After moving from Bakersfield to Rochester, MN. in 2004, he and his wife became members of Family of Christ Lutheran Church, and he continued to work with the the needy at Channel One Food Shelf.He was pre-deceased by two brothers and a sister.He is survived by his wife, Delores, and her sister, Carol (William) Swearingen of Addison, Texas, and nine nieces and nephews.Friends and co-workers remember Dick for his sense of humor, generosity, and willingness. Memorials may be made to Family of Christ Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.No services were requested.Mr. Regedal bequeathed his remains to Mayo Foundation for medical research.
