Phyllis Marie (Brumm) Engstrom, 97, died of heart failure Wednesday night (July 6) at Seasons Hospice House in Rochester, MN. She was born October 29, 1918 in Rochester, MN to Paul PFWC & Anna Marie (Ebling) Brumm. In 1939 she married John Edward Jack Macken who lost his life in 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge during WWII when their son was 3 years old. On March 9, 1947 she married Richard Haven Dick Engstrom and was blessed with 2 more sons. Phyllis worked as a bookkeeper for Julius Estes, then worked at Waters Conley and later did housekeeping for local motels. Phyllis loved to dance, garden, mow lawn (well into her 90s) & play cards, especially cribbage. She was an active member of Ascension Evangelical Lutheran Church. Her husband, Dick died of cancer December 2, 1984. Phyllis was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gordon Brumm; sisters Lorraine Coggins and Helen Bond; son, Charles William Bill Macken, and great grandson, Logan Fredrick Engstrom. Phyllis is survived by sons, Perry (Charlotte) and Rick (Patricia) Engstrom and daughter-in-law, Jenny Macken. Her grandchildren are: John (Megan), Jill, Laurie, Kim and Teague Macken; Christy (Jim) Ryan; Corey (Sarah), Peter (Sarah), Michael (Candice), Joel (Staci) and Steven Engstrom. She had the joy to know great-grandchildren: Kylie, Alexis, Gabrielle, Ryan, David, Nolyn, Aiden, Elijah and Adeline. Phyllis would be honored to be remembered with memorials to Seasons Hospice, Mayo Clinic (cancer research), or Ascension Evangelical Lutheran Church. It was her wish to be cremated (Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Home). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 3pm with visitation beginning an hour earlier at Ascension Evangelical Lutheran church, 2207 11th Ave SE, Rochester, MN.
