ROCHESTER, MINN:Pauline R. Utzinger, 87, was released from chronic pain on September 30, 2012. Pauline was born April 9, 1925 in Rochester to Lyle and Mabel (Schanke) Utzinger.She received a BA in Psychology from Carleton College in 1947, and then continued graduate work at Bryn Mawr College.Following a year as Dean of Freshmen Women at the University of WI at Madison, she returned to Carleton as Assistant to the Dean of Women for two years.A year of serving as High School Librarian in Pine Island, MN led to her taking the library minor at Winona State University, where she later received her MS degree in Counseling in 1966.She served as Counselor at Winona High School for 10 years.In 1969, she returned to Rochester and was the Public Relations Librarian at the Rochester Public Library for nearly 16 years.She was a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), having joined in Northfield and later served the Rochester AAUW in many capacities.With Carleton, she served as an Alumni Admissions Representative, as her Class Agent, on the Alumni Board of Directors, and as an Alumni Representative to the College Council. She received Carletons Exceptional Service Award in 1997.Her longstanding interest and knowledge in genealogy led to her teaching courses for Rochester Community Education.She served ten years on the Board of Trustees of the Olmsted County Historical Society and was its president 1987-1989.Her interest in womens rights motivated her to help organize a union affiliation for her coworkers at the library, and she served as their president during the time when comparable worth was being decided for the city of Rochester. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Doug Carey of Crookston, MN; nephew, Christopher Clampitt of East Lansing, MI, and his daughters, Jeana and Kelsey; niece, Carolyn Caswell of Maple Grove, MN, and her son, Ben; niece, Susan Bouchard of Victorville, CA, and her husband David; and many friends from Rochester and Carleton College. She was preceded in death by parents, Lyle and Mabel (Schanke) Utzinger; and sisters, Lois Carey and Joan Clampitt A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Fifth Ave. SW, Rochester, MN 55902.Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.A private family inurnment will be held in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Pauline Utzinger Endowment Fund at Carleton College, One North College St., Northfield, MN 55057, or the Olmsted County Historical Society, History Center of Olmsted County, 1195 W Circle Drive SW, Rochester, MN 55902.
