On February 2, 2022, Olive May Francis, nee Heath, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away at the age of 84. Olive was born on April 29, 1937 in Rocky point, Clarendon Jamaica the second to youngest of 10 children to Ernest and Ethel Heath. Her father was a pillar of the community, and their "yard" was the gathering place, refuge and home for many relatives, friends and several half-siblings that were welcomed with love and care. This theme of caring for others runs strongly through the family and is exemplified when Olive, age 19 was sponsored by her older sister Isolda Maxwell to move to Nottingham, England. In turn a few years later Olive sponsored the next sister, Novlet as there was little opportunity in the small fishing village for employment and advancement. Olive would continue the life-long tradition of refuge by sponsoring others time and time again. While in England, Olive met her future husband, Murrel Francis, a son of Rocky Point and decided to emigrate to North America. Olive's first North American stop was Montreal Canada. There she secured employment and sent for Murrel. The two were married upon his arrival. During their time in Canada, Olive worked primarily as a domestic worker to put Murrel through college. Her strong work ethic pulled her to different places and eventually they moved to New York where after 9 years of marriage they were able to have children. They moved back to Jamaica for several years where they owned a small farm and Olive did small trade, while Murrel taught school, but the pull of better opportunity drove them back to the US. Olive was highly ambitious and eventually found her way to owning her own business merchandizing to Caribbean farm workers harvesting crops along the northeast corridor. The niche of Olive's market changed with the seasons, Connecticut during the summer months, New York in the Fall, and South Florida during the Winter months. She was a tough negotiator and canny businesswoman and as she as the business grew, Murrel began to work with her. Many family members can attest to getting their start working for "Mrs. Francis." and they eventually employed many others over the years; primarily people beginning their immigrant journey. Throughout this time, they sponsored, housed, and supported countless family members and friends as they sought a foothold in a new country. Olive was widowed in 1996 and continued to support her daughters and friends. She later transitioned the business over to her "adopted" son, Orlando Barrett. As she left merchandising, she transitioned into various forms of health care. Olive would become the caregiver for many elderly families. However, she would continue to merchandise at various flea markets. She would often say she liked the feel of money in her hands. Olive moved back to Jamaica in retirement where she enjoyed the beauty of her home island. However, health concerns propelled her return to South Florida. During the pandemic she lived in California and then Minnesota with her daughters and was able to spend time with them and her grandchildren before her death. All who knew Olive, could see a spunky lady who was never afraid to stand up for herself and others. She spoke her mind without fear or regret. While she could have a tough exterior, she was soft on the inside and was quick to show love and kindness. She will be greatly missed and is survived by daughters; Vanessa Torbenson and Michelle Francis Henschel, sons -in law; Michael Torbenson and Christopher Henschel, grandchildren; Elijah Torbenson, Madeline Torbenson, Jonathon Torbenson, Annika Torbenson and her namesake Olivia Henschel. She is also survived by her sister Novlet Heath Moore, and her "adopted" son Orlando Barrett, countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her. Olive will be laid to rest next to her husband at the cemetery at St Andrew's Church in Rocky Point, Jamaica.
