Mavis E. Nelson

Mavis E. Nelson, 95, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Samaritan Bethany in Rochester. Mavis Eleanor Nelson was born April 7, 1921 in La Crosse, WI. to Ray and Clarice (Sanness) Chapel. She was raised in Faribault, MN graduating from Faribault High School and graduating from Waldorf College in Forest City, IA. Mavis also attended Mankato State University, Winona State University and University of Minnesota.She taught primary school in Ames, IA, Red Wing, Kenyon, and Richfield, MN.Mavis also spent 15 years teaching both in Fresno and Santa Ana, CA.and the last 20 plus years teaching 2nd grade at St. Pius in Rochester.She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and of the Gloria Dei Widows Group. Mavis is survived by her son, Scott (Suzanne) Nelson of Golden Valley, MN.; two grandchildren; Faith & Miles Nelson, two sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and their children and the families of the students at St. Pius School.She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Myrl Buck Chapel and Wayne Chapel. A memorial service will be held Saturday July 16 at noon, with visitation at 11:00 in the Chapel at Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th. Rochester Mn. All are welcome.
