Margaret Lillian Hughes, 98, died on July 31, 2011 at Golden Living Center East in Rochester, where she had been a resident for the past month. Margaret was born in Hayfield, MN on March 7, 1913 to Walter and Marie (Hagen) Jensen.She spent her childhood in Hayfield and graduated from Hayfield High School, moving to Rochester in 1933. Margaret married Fredrick L. Hughes on September 12, 1938 in Hayfield, MN.She worked at Faber Greenhouse and at Mayo Clinic in the Hematology lab for 20 years, retiring in 1975.In retirement, Margaret and Fred enjoyed spending part of the winter in Hawaii and part of the summer at their cabin in Northern Minnesota.She enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, playing cards and especially spending time with her family.She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Russell (George Bell) of Coon Rapids and a son, Fred (Teresa) Hughes of Rochester; four grandchildren, Gayle (Barbara) Russell of Spring, TX, Vickie (Andy) Woods of Brainerd, Jeremy (Susie) Hughes of Basalt, CO and Angie Hughes of Rochester; eight great grandchildren, Allan Hamm, April Russell, Christopher and Cody Russell, Trevor and Eric Woods and Nathan and Abbie Hughes; and four great-great grandchildren, Marissa and Makayla Hamm and Trevor and Kylee Russell; two sisters, Ellen (Jerry) Sotebeer of Spring Hill, FL and Doris Vitelli of Elmhurst, IL; one brother, Walter (Florence) Jensen of Hayfield; one sister-in-law, Jean Jensen of Kasson. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick on March 15, 1998, after 59 years of marriage; one son-in-law, Buddy Russell; three sisters, Myra Sietsema, Alice (Ira) Mueller and Dorothy Stanton; two brothers, Wallace and Frank (Lillian) Jensen; and one brother-in-law, Victor Vitelli. There will be a funeral service on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church (810 3rd Avenue SE).Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday, August 5, 2011 at the church. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens. Memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church.
