Louis "John" Mentink, Jr.

ROCHESTER, MINN:John Mentink, 85, passed away December 4th.John was born October 10, 1929 to Louis and Jennie Mentink.He married Mary Jansen on November 11, 1949 at Holy Family Catholic Church.He lived in Mason City, Iowa, and worked for the Armour plant for 35 years.He retired in 1983. John was very proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with his three children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.He enjoyed golfing, gardening, collecting things, woodworking and making soup.He loved watching all sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes. John and his wife moved to Rochester in 2008 to be closer to family.They made a home at Realife Cooperative where John enjoyed serving on the board of directors and upgrade committee.He was blessed to make many wonderful friends at Realife.He received outstanding care from many people throughout his illness, including Lynn Borkenhagen and Mary Larson. John is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Debbie (Steve) Grosland of Rochester; Annette (Raymond) LeBouef of Cut Off, LA; and Neal (Deb) Mentink of Stewart, FL.He is also survived by one brother, Joe (Pat) Mentink and three sisters Arlys Kimball, Margaret (Dean) Johnson and Ragna (Ronnie) Flatness. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Judy Franzen, and his brother Maurice Mentink. Grandpa John was loved by his nine grandchildren: Amy (Brian) Meade, Lynn Freesemann, Mike (Tanetha) Grosland, Heather (Mitchell) Dodson, Ryan (Missy) Freudenburg, Mackenzie Mentink, Jon Mentink, Kelsey Armstrong and Patrick Armstrong. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, December 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes 5421 Royal Place NW Rochester, MN.Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.Enichment will be at Oakwood Cemetery Columbarium.Memorials are suggested to Mayo Hospice.
