Joseph Hugh Canney passed away on May 14, 2012 surrounded by his family. A Catholic Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rochester, Minnesota.Visitation will be held one hour before the Mass at St. Francis. Mr. Canney was born on December 10, 1926 in Jamestown, ND to B.L. and Kathryn Canney.He graduated from Rochester High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy on July 1st, 1944.He then entered the pre-flight training program at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN.He was united in marriage to Winifred E. Schlitgus on November 11, 1946.Mr. and Mrs. Canney were long-standing members of St. Francis Catholic Church.Mr. Canney was employed at the Olmsted Medical Group for 30 years where he retired as the Controller.He played the cornet in the Chatfield Brass Band for many years.He was a member of the Rochester Widowed Persons Group for the last 5 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Winifred; brothers Lewis, Terry, Bob, and Bernie; sister Ann Lampman; and granddaughter Molly McGuire Schild.He is survived by his sons Christopher (Judy) Canney of Bloomington, MN; Mark (Mary) of Honolulu, HI; Sean (Mary) of Faribault, MN; Tony (Joni) of Lakeville, MN; daughters Jane (George Borer) Canney of St. Paul, MN; Margaret (Steve) Schild of Winona, MN; and Kate (Tony) Tarvestad of Medina, MN; and daughter-in-law Patricia Canney of Minneapolis, MN.He is also survived by his grandchildren Chris (Emily) Canney, Suzanne Canney, Annie Canney, Winifred Canney, Andrea Canney, Joseph Borer, Elizabeth (Elliott Augst) Borer, Jake Schild, Sam Schild, Emily Canney, Patrick Canney, Joseph Tarvestad, Hugh Canney and Maddy Canney; great-grandchildren Ben and Grace Canney.He is also survived by special friend, Helen Sell. Mr. Canney was a soft-spoken Irishman with a quick wit who was kind to everyone.He was a devoted husband and a wonderful dad, granddad and great-granddad who will be missed tremendously.Special thanks to the Silver Lake Boys Choir (his Thursday Coffee Group).
