Jon Edward Nelson, 75, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at The Mayo Clinic, St. Marys campus. Jon was born November 8, 1942 in Austin, MN to Floyd and Claire (Hedges) Nelson. He was a 1960 graduate of Austin High School. Jon went on to proudly serve his country as part of the Air Force, serving in Guam. After his military service, he went to the University of Wisconsin Stout and graduated with a degree in computer programming. Jon worked for IBM as a computer programmer and also taught in the Department of Education at IBM. He enjoyed traveling to Japan to teach students about computer programming. He retired from IBM after 30 years of service. On March 20, 1965, Jon married Katharine "Tinka" Tomhave. Over the years, Jon enjoyed woodworking, visiting with people and had a passion for playing golf. Above all, Jon had a great love for his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a kind, loving, humorous, soft-hearted true gentleman. He will be missed. Jon is survived by his children, Jennifer (John) Simon of Spring Valley, MN, Andrew (Katie) Nelson of Lakeville, MN; grandchildren, Odin and Isaac Simon, Damion Buck, Dominique, Logan, Aaron, Gavin Nelson and Ryan Madsen; his loving partner, Helen Sheller of Rochester; cousin, Mary Wilson of Elk River, MN and a host of other family and friends. Jon was preceded in death by his wife, Katharine "Tinka"; sister, Margo LaPerre and parents, Floyd and Claire. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2018 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1212 12th Ave. NW, Rochester. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester and one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev.
