John R. Berg, age 60, was called home to his loving Saviors arms on July 19, 2013 after a five year battle with malignant melanoma. John was born in New Ulm, MN on August 22, 1952 to Sigwald and Millie (Fredrickson) Berg.He spent his childhood years in Hanska, MN growing up on his familys farm. John graduated from New Ulm High School and attended Mankato State University and Dunwoody Institute of Technology.He moved to Rochester, MN in 1973 and began work at Nietz Electric where he worked as an electrician for 20 years.In 1993 he became the Chief City Electrical Inspector where he worked until he retired in May of 2013. John had a deep love for his Savior, Jesus, which led him to cherish his family, church and community.His hobbies, besides being with his wife, children and grandchildren, were sharing his knowledge of the electrical trade, wood working, sailing, camping, and landscaping. John is survived by his best friend, high school sweetheart, and loving wife of 39 years, Gail; two children, Andrea (Andrew) Schmeling, of Holmen, WI, and Philip (Corinne) Berg, of Rochester;four grandsons, Luke, Jack, and Samuel Schmeling and Grandson Berg, to be born this fall; two brothers, David (Jackie) Berg, of Forest Lake, MN, and Paul (Sharon) Berg, of Odin, MN; sister-in-law, Mary Berg; and mother-in-law Donna Lowinske of New Ulm, MN. John is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Peter and his father-in-law, Luverne Lowinske. A Funeral Service will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 23rd at 11:00am, 4520 19th Ave NW, withRev. James Hein and Rev. Jon Bitter officiating.Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. on Monday, July 22nd, 2013 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home and an hour prior to the service at the church.
