Jeffrey Hensley

October 13, 1969 — January 14, 2025

With a heart full of sunshine and a smile that could light up a room, Jeff left his rocking recliner, headphones, and M&M's behind on January 14, 2025, to join his angel mom, Marcia Hensley, and his baby sister, Tara Jane. Though his life was measured differently, it was a symphony of joy filled with the simple pleasures of warm hugs, the beat of his favorite songs, rocking in his chair, and the pure, unfiltered love he shared with everyone who knew him.

Jeff had an amazing ability to trust his caregivers, relying on them to meet his every need. He was always full of spirit and wasn't afraid to show a little stubbornness now and then! We quickly figured out that a handful of M&Ms would usually do the trick to win him over. His sparkling eyes conveyed gratitude, teaching us all about the true meaning of unconditional love in his own special way. Even though he was mostly nonverbal, he delighted us with unexpected little mumbles that would make us giggle, followed by his adorable laugh, "heehee." We'll always remember his sweet spirit and infectious giggle! Jeff might have had a unique journey, but his impact on those around him was truly profound. He reminded us that happiness isn't just about milestones; it's really all about the love we share with one another. His sister, Natasha, often shared that Jeff taught her more about life without breathing a word.

Jeff was born on October 13, 1969, to James and Marcia (Southwick) Hensley at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Shortly after birth, Jeff was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, resulting in three major brain surgeries. While the procedures eventually resolved the hydrocephalus, Jeff was left with significant brain damage.

When Jeff was seven, he became one of the first residents of Hiawatha Homes, Inc. when it opened its first location on Assisi Heights in Rochester. As a result, he formed countless friendships and built a "bonus family" in the loving and nurturing environment provided there.

Since 1976, Hiawatha Homes has grown to meet community needs and now offers support through twenty-one residential homes, respite care, family support, and in-home assistance. Hiawatha Homes currently supports about 120 children and adults in Olmsted County. These individuals have developmental disabilities, physical health needs, brain injuries, specialized medical needs, autism spectrum disorder, and emotional or behavioral health needs.

After graduating from the Rochester Public Schools special education program in 1991, Jeff began working at "Possibilities," a workshop serving individuals with varied disabilities.

Jeff was actively involved with Hiawatha's numerous events and outings, ranging from Twins baseball games and bowling to picnics and parties. Jeff loved to shop, especially with his sister Natasha, often challenging her to keep up as he commandeered a shopping cart and took off down store isles! Another favorite activity was taking in a movie with Mom and Dad, especially if it came with popcorn or M&Ms. At home he enjoyed sitting in his rocking recliner with his headphones on listening to music.Jeff's loving family will always carry his spirit in their hearts. He is survived by his father, James Hensley, and bonus mom, Sandra Hensley, of Luverne, MN; his sister, Natasha (Tony) Weis; cherished nephews Drew (Makayla) and Alex (Kenzie) Weis, bonus sisters, Missy (Evan) Verbrugge and Heather (Greg) Feltman; along with many beloved bonus nieces and nephews.
