ROCHESTER -Jason S. Stevens, 19, of Rochester, MN died on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. Jason Shaun Stevens was born in Salt Lake City, UT on August 13, 1992 to Shaun and Kristin (Nelson) Stevens. In 2002, he moved with his family from Sandy, UT to Rochester. Jason will be sadly missed by his family, Shaun and Kris Stevens of Rochester; siblings Courtney and Bruce Stevens of Rochester; his grandparents, John and Kathy Stevens of Springville, UT and Jerald and Zeta Nelson of Sandy, UT; and aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Jason was a soft-spoken young man with a tender heart for young children. At church he could always be found holding a baby in his arms. As a big brother he helped his younger siblings with their math homework. Jason's intelligence and hard work paid off in academics: he was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to Augsburg College. At the time of his death he was a freshman majoring in chemistry. He was also on the Augsburg College cross country team. Jason graduated from Century High School in June 2011. While there, he served as a cross country team captain. He also participated in track and Nordic skiing. His workouts were very important to him, planning his daily schedule around his dedicated exercise regimen. Jason accomplished much in his 19 years. In the 2010 election Jason campaigned and ran for a State Senate seat. As a young adolescent he decided to earn his Eagle Scout at the earliest possible time. His goal oriented manner helped him earn this ranking when he was only 13 years old. Jason also participated in various school activities including Honors Orchestra, the Minnesota Economics Challenge, Jazz band, Science Olympiad, Ultimate Frisbee, Four Square, Hearts Club, and National Honor Society. In his free time Jason loved playing piano and video games. He spent time in the Boundary Waters. On these trips Jason was always the first to volunteer to carry canoes in between portages, often making several trips for others. Jason was also an avid reader. A Facebook post summed up Jason's influence nicely: "high king of Boy Scout merit badges, eagerly but tenderly holding babies at church, running every race with fierce determination."
