Janice Groteboer

With her children by her side, Janice Lynn Groteboer passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 30, 2019. She was 69 years old. Born in Stambaugh, Michigan on September 22, 1949, Janice was the only child of doting parents Edmund B. and Dorothy K. Waite. She grew up in Bates Township, Michigan, in a home her parents built next door to her paternal grandparents. Each summer, the family spent significant time at their property on Sunset Lake, a place still dear to her family today. Jan was an extremely giving and caring person, and after graduating from Iron River High School in 1967, she moved to Rochester, MN to attend Saint Mary's School of Nursing and make a career out of helping others. It is also where she met John Gary Groteboer, who would become her husband of over 22 years. Following her graduation from nursing school in 1970, Jan spent one year working as a Registered Nurse in Denver before returning to Rochester, where she and Gary married on September 30, 1972. Jan also returned to St. Mary's where she worked in neurosurgery, first as a staff nurse, then head nurse and, ultimately, supervisor. She was also an educator, working tirelessly to develop detailed neurosurgery orientation manuals. Building on her dedication to excellence in patient care, she later served as one of Mayo's first Surgical RN Communicators, delivering messages and providing support to patients' families the day of their surgery. Janice is survived by two children, Jodi (Jason) and Jon (Jen), one step-son, Steven (Beverly), six beloved grandchildren, Rayna, Summit, Clara, Leif, Weston and Kelsey, and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, all of whom she dearly missed. Prior to her passing, she enjoyed time spent with her family and friends - particularly her grandchildren - desserts, her treasured Pomeranian Mysti, desserts, gardening, and desserts. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staffs of Bostrom Terrace, Mayo Clinic and North Memorial Hospital for their excellent care. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes in Rochester. The family welcomes all who knew Jan to join them as early as 10:00 a.m., with a service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials in Jan's honor be made to Accessible Space, Inc. or Paws and Claws Humane Society.
