Indrani Nagpaul-Chaudhry

June 15, 1959 — August 23, 2024

Dr. Indrani Nagpaul-Chaudhry peacefully passed away on August 23, 2024, at Saint Mary's Hospital, Mayo Clinic, surrounded by her loving daughter, Alisha Puja Chaudhry, and devoted husband, Dr. Rajeev Chaudhry. She fought a courageous 27-month battle with Stage 4 Sarcoma, demonstrating immense strength and resilience. Her family extends their deepest gratitude to the exceptional physicians and allied health staff at Mayo Clinic for their expertise, compassion, and unwavering support during her illness.

Born in 1959 in New Delhi, India, to Dr. Dhanpat Rai Nagpaul and Mrs. Gian Devi Nagpaul, Indrani was destined for a life dedicated to the care of others. She graduated from Lady Hardinge Medical College in 1984 with a medical degree and completed a junior residency in Pediatrics in 1986. Following in her father's footsteps, she pursued a Master's in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, a journey that would set the stage for her remarkable career in medicine.

In 1988, Indrani joined Care International in India as the Regional Manager for Primary Care, overseeing maternal and child healthcare initiatives across 10 states. Her work was pivotal in addressing the healthcare needs of rural populations, with a focus on children's illnesses, respiratory care, growth promotion, and immunizations. She trained field personnel in critical areas such as epidemiology, adult education, and software applications, ensuring the effective delivery of care to those in need.

Indrani's passion for pediatric care eventually brought her to the United States, where she met and married Dr. Rajeev Chaudhry, in Florida in 1992. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Alisha, in 1997, who became the center of Indrani's world.

From 1992 to 1995, Indrani completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. Upon finishing her training, she and Rajeev joined Austin Medical Center, Mayo Clinic Health System, where she provided comprehensive pediatric care until 2000. The family then relocated to Rochester, MN, where Indrani served in the Pediatrics Emergency Department at Mayo Clinic for a year before joining Olmsted Medical Center in 2003. As Chair of the Department of Pediatrics for many years, she was instrumental in leading initiatives to improve vaccination rates and manage chronic conditions in children. Her dedication to her patients and their families was evident in every aspect of her work, and she was deeply cherished by all who knew her. Indrani retired in 2019 due to health reasons.

Preceded in death by her parents and the family dog, Shonu, Indrani is survived by her older brother, Dev Rattan Nagpaul, and his family (Pimi, Dhruv, and Vani and Anirban), and her older sister, Dr. Gita Bhatia, and her family (Karan, Neal, Seema, Nikhil, Lara, and Rajiv). She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and dedication.

Indrani cherished spending time with her daughter, their dog Mili, and her family and friends. She enjoyed watching shows with Alisha, creating art, baking, and traveling together. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering principles of honesty, fairness, and compassion touched the lives of everyone she met. She lived a life without material interests, cherishing and preaching love above all else.

A celebration of Indrani's life will be held on Wednesday, August 28, at 5:30 PM at Cascade Lake Park, Cascade Lakeside, 88 23rd Avenue SW, Rochester, MN. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations be made to Sarcoma Research at Mayo Clinic. A GoFundMe site has been established for this purpose (https://gofund.me/22af2c64). As Indrani received blood during her treatment, the family also encourages those who are able to donate blood in her honor.
