Dr. Horst Zincke, 74, of Rochester died September 30, 2011.A longtime Mayo Clinic Urologist, he was an internationally recognized leader and pioneer in the surgical management of cancers of the kidney, bladder, and prostate. Dr. Zincke was born April 20, 1937 in Germany.He received his medical degree from the University of Frankfurt in 1966.Subsequently, he completed residencies in surgery and urology in Germany, at the University of Iowa, and at the Mayo Clinic.Dr. Zincke then completed a fellowship in organ transplantation and research at Mayo Clinic in 1974.He was appointed to the staff with a joint appointment in urology and transplant surgery in 1975. Dr. Zincke was the recipient of a named professorship, the D. C. Utz Professor of Urology, in 1993, and he retired as a Professor and Consultant in Urology in 2006. Dr. Zincke mentored countless residents and fellows, and lectured widely nationally and internationally.He was known as a fearless and technically gifted surgeon capable of removing the most difficult urologic tumors. Dr. Zincke utilized his renal transplantation skills to develop operations to spare normal portions of kidneys that harbored tumors.He is credited for helping to determine that such operations are preferable to complete kidney removal when feasible.In addition to his clinical care and teaching skills, Dr. Zincke was prolific in research, with over 400 scientific publications over his career. Dr. Zincke led an active life outside of work. He enjoyed time with his family, pursuing outdoor activities including alpine skiing, rowing, and hunting, and he was an avid traveler.Dr. Zincke is survived by his sister Doris Spengel, his wife of 45 years, Maren Zincke, his daughter Dr. Miriam Tanja Zincke-Ohad and son Marian Zincke, their spouses Gil Ohad and Margaret Zincke, and his grandchildren Alexander Ohad, and Kathleen and Axel Zincke. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday October 15th at St. Marys Chapel, 1216 2nd St. SW, Rochester MN, 55902.Reception to follow at 12:00 p.m. in the Elizabethan Ballroom, Kahler Grand Hotel, 20 2nd Ave, Rochester, MN.
