Hilmen Scharberg

December 10, 1932 — August 11, 2016

Hilmen Donald Scharberg, 83, of Rochester, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Seasons Hospice, following a short illness. He was the son of Aden and Mabel (Hyland) Scharberg, was born in Rock Dell, MN on December 10, 1932 delivered by his grandmother, Gunheld (Morgen) Scharberg at the Axel Scharberg home place. He was confirmed at Evanger Lutheran Church and attended school in a one room rural setting and graduated from Hayfield High School in 1950. He clerked at Oslo store for one year before enlisting in the Air Force for four years during the Korean War, the highlight being involved in Operation Castle, a hydrogen bomb test in the pacific. Hilmen married Barbara Bev Law in April of 1957 in Elgin, MN. He worked at IBM Rochester for 30 years while running an 80 acre farm with hogs and dairy, with the help of Bev. Always the outdoorsman, he grew up trapping gophers for money, loved fishing with family and friends, deer hunting for over 40 years and was always ready to tell you a story about an episode of his life. Family was always the most important thing in his life and the family farm is now lived on by his son, Rodney and his wife Sherry. Hilmen and Bev spent 25 years going to Alamo, TX for 4 months in the winter. Hilmen is survived by his wife Barbara Bev Scharberg; daughter, Rhonda; son, Rodney (Sherry); 3 grandchildren, Melissa, Adam, Jacy; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon; nephew, Chris (Kim); 3 great nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson and a brother-in-law. A funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 2204 22nd St. NW, Rochester. Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 PM Monday, August 15, 2016 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester and one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. George Schweitzer and Rev. Mark Nienow will be co-officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery following the service.
