Age 90, formerly of Rochester, Minnesota, died August 4, 2011. Services will be officiated by Rabbi Michelle Werner on August 7 at noon in Rochester Minnesota at the Oakwood Cemetery. Lunch will immediately follow the service at Bnai Israel Synagogue. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 20 years Esther Golob Smerkins; parents Herman and Rose; and sister Shirley. Survived by stepchildren Brian and wife Sandy Golob, Terry Golob, and Lynn Phillips and Bart Phillips; grandchildren Mark, Freddie, Scott, Laura and Samantha; and cousins and many loving family friends. Herb was born in Brooklyn New York, lived many years in Chicago and in Rochester. Herb volunteered and joined the Army Air Force and served as a Pilot during WWII. He flew many missions over Europe. Herb graduated from Northwestern University at the top of his class with a degree in Business and became a CPA. He was an intelligent, gentle, kind and considerate man who loved music, reading, sailing, bicycling, home improvement projects, gadgets and electronics. He was devoted to his wife and family. Herb enriched all of our lives and will be missed, but never forgotten. Memorials preferred to Bnai Israel Synagogue (Rochester, MN).
