Harold attended rural Byron area elementary school and graduated from Byron High School in 1946. He farmed with his father and worked as a John Deere tractor mechanic prior to serving in Germany as a truck mechanic in a medic division during the Korean War from 1950-1952. After the service, Harold continued to farm with his father and brother, and worked as a tractor mechanic until he began employment with IBM in 1959, and worked there until his retirement in 1987.
