Harland Broin

Harland L. Broin, 85, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Samaritan Bethany. Harland was born January 14, 1933 in Wanamingo to Arthur and Edna (Flaten) Broin. He was a graduate of Kenyon High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army , stationed in Germany. After returning home from Germany, Harland married Barbara Himle on October 26, 1957 at West St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He began his lifelong career with NCR as a serviceman and retired in 1993. Harland and Barbara enjoyed traveling together, visiting Norway, Alaska, Hawaii and going out West every year to visit family. Harland loved working in his yard, riding his John Deere tractor and having morning coffee at HyVee with friends. He also enjoyed doing crafts, puzzles, tinkering with woodworking, card club, fixing things and he loved staying up on business and the stock market. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Harland was a gentle, humble, loving father and husband. He was always ready to lend a hand, was wise with advice, generous with his time and loved to have fun. Above all, he loved his family. Harland is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barb; children, Rhonda (Brian) Maghan of Shorewood, MN, Scott Broin of Chanhassen, MN, Sharon (Rod) Morris of Rochester; grandchildren, Cally (Taylor) Bunne, Ashley (Chris) Hanson, Lindsey and Brent Maghan and great-grandchildren, Carson and Mason Bunne and Aria Hanson. Harland is also survived by his siblings, Donald (Sarah) Broin, Beverly (George) Felten, Lowell (Nancy) Broin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Edna and by his grandson, Justin Broin. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1212 12th Ave. NW, Rochester. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of the service.
