Gregory Ronald Schoenbeck

Gregory Ronald Schoenbeck, age 51, passed away on January 22, 2022, at his home in Rochester, MN. Gregory Ronald Schoenbeck was born March 21, 1970, to Ronald and Patricia Schoenbeck in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Luther High School South in Chicago, the University of Illinois in Chicago, and Winona State University in Winona, MN. Greg married Mary (Nypen) Schoenbeck on June 27, 1992, in Ortonville, MN. After college, Greg taught math at Luther High School South in Chicago, Pine Island High School in Pine Island, MN and Friedell Middle School in Rochester, MN. He loved directing the school plays at Friedell and spent many years coaching MathCounts with the students at Friedell. He was recently working at Target, where he enjoyed his co-workers, the customers, and the Target discount! Greg was an active member of Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester, where he was a confirmation mentor, Lectern, and enjoyed being in several Lenten dramas. He was a man of great faith and was devoted to scripture and the word of God. Greg loved getting ready for school each day, never repeating the same tie in the same school year. He was a science fiction fanatic, filling his classroom and home office with sci-fi posters, memorabilia and books. He enjoyed going to the comic bookstore with Michael on the weekends bringing home stacks of Marvel and DC comics to add to his collection of books and music. His favorite pastime was watching all of the Marvel and Star Wars movies and viewing any paranormal or extraterrestrial show that Discover and SYFY had to offer. He enjoyed spending time with family at home, ordering weekly food from Hunan Garden, followed by a movie with Kuma, the family dog, sitting in his lap. He loved to travel to Chicago to visit family and begged them to have Giordano's pizza, his most beloved restaurant. Greg made many trips to Moorhead, MN to visit extended family. He was always eager to catch the new Star Wars movie over Christmas break. Greg was a wonderful husband and father. Teaching was his love and he dedicated many hours to his profession. He taught at Friedell Middle School for over 20 years and touched the lives of many students. Greg was a kind, warm and friendly human being. He was loved by so many people, and he will be greatly missed. Greg left this earth too early, but his family will carry on the memories they have of a wonderful, caring person. Greg is survived by his mother, Pat Schoenbeck of Lockport, IL; wife, Mary Schoenbeck of Rochester, MN; son, Michael Schoenbeck of Rochester, MN; sister, Chris (Bob) Tague of Lockport IL; sister, Vicki (Tom) of Lyon's IL; brother, Tim (Jennifer) Schoenbeck of Oak Forest, IL; and ten nieces and nephews. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Schoenbeck. Memorial services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2022 at Zumbro Lutheran Church, 624 3rd Ave SW, Rochester, MN, with visitation starting at 3:00 p.m. until the service begins. Rev. Shelly Cunningham will officiate. Due to COVID-19, masks will be required and social distancing observed.
