Fern Sophia Lindberg, 100, passed away peacefully February 25, 2016 at Samaritan Bethany. Fern was born in a log cabin September 7, 1915, in Kerrick, MN to Swedish immigrants Minnie and Charley Anderson. She was schooled in Moose Lake, MN. On June 24, 1939, she married Clarence (Larry) Lindberg at Oak Lake Church in Kerrick. Fern and Larry lived in Duluth most of their married life before moving to Rochester in 1997 to be closer to family. After 59 years of marriage, Larry passed away in September 1998. Fern and Larry were members of Hosanna Lutheran Church and she recently became a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Fern had many talents. She loved to sew, knit, quilt, paint, decorate, garden, play bridge and do crossword puzzles. She was known for her Swedish rice pudding, rye bread and cinnamon rolls. She and Larry enjoyed years of playing golf, pool, bowling and fishing together. Fern loved dressing up, wearing high heels (which she did until age 90) and going dancing on Saturday nights with Larry. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Sweden and, at age 89, traveled to the South Pacific with her family. Most of all, Fern enjoyed spending time with her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fern is survived by her daughter, Barbara (David) Arlander; grandson, Scott (Jane) Arlanderof Cook Islands; granddaughter, Jodi (John) Kloss of Strum, WI; four great-grandchildren, Luke, Christopher, Kairoa and Faith; one great, great-grandson, Louis; sisters, Elfie Pangburn, Myrtle Baker and Jerine Jones Erickson; brothers, Dennis and Lyle Anderson and many nieces and nephews. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; daughter, Beverly Faye; her parents; brothers, Jimmy and Hurley Anderson and sisters, Dode Smith and Wellma Norberg. Ferns family is most grateful for the caring staff at Samaritan Bethanys Essex House. They treated Fern with kindness, compassion, dignity and love. A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1212 12th Ave. NW, Rochester. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until time of service at the church. The Rev. Karna Hagen Moskalik will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Samaritan Bethany or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
