On March 11, 2024, Elizabeth Esther Rahn, 95, of Rochester, MN., joyfully went to meet Jesus in Heaven.
Elizabeth was born in her parent's farmhouse in Altura, MN on January 9, 1929. Her brother Richard was happy to have a new baby sister. Elizabeth's father, Herbert, was a farmer who raised wheat and corn and had an apple orchard. Her mother, Esther, was a hard-working wife and mother who loved her children dearly.
The family attended Hebron Moravian Church. From a very young age, Elizabeth's faith in God was unwavering. In 1947, when Elizabeth was 18, she moved to Rochester to begin her career as a live-in nanny. She first worked for George and Jean Waters, a prominent Rochester family. She deeply loved their children Brenda, Dain, and Anne. Over the next 47 years, Elizabeth was the devoted nanny to 29 children. The last family she lived with was the Emory family from 1991 until 1994, caring for their son Kyle. Theresa, Roger, and Kyle considered her family.
At the age of 65, she retired and had a wonderful retirement party at Calvary Baptist Church in June 1994. Many of the families that she had cared for over the years came to her party from as far as Texas and Massachusetts. She spent the next 22 years at Park Towers Apartments and was very active, serving as the President of the Park Towers Community for several years. She enjoyed bringing the treats to coffee hour; always lots of cookies. She was also a faithful Salvation Army volunteer for 10 years. Her last 8 years were at Cottage Wood Senior Communities where she enjoyed their special care.
Elizabeth's Christian faith Is her legacy. An active member of Calvary Baptist Church, she gave in so many ways. For many years she wrote birthday cards, sympathy cards, get well cards for the members of her church. She prayed every day for all 29 children that she cared for and read her bible each morning and each evening. She faithfully gave much of her small monthly retirement check to the Lord. By her actions, she shared a beautiful testimony of love and faith. Her kind, gentle spirit touched everyone she met.
She leaves behind dear friend and companion Holly Vaughn (Claremont, MN), Drs. Theresa and Roger Emory of Williamsburg, Virginia, Kyle and Carolyn Emory of Santa Monica California, and countless other children who she loved throughout the years. Elizabeth has the soul of a child. God loves the little children. Welcome home Elizabeth.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church (5905 Silas Dent Rd NW, Rochester, MN 55901). Burial will be at Our Savior's Moravian Hebron Cemetery in Altura, MN.
