Eleanore Anne Stoppel

Eleanore Anne (brewer) Stoppel, 91, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Charter House in Rochester, where she resided the past 16 years. Eleanore was the only child born to Joseph E. and Edith (Gilmore) Brewer on January 21, 1922 in Arkansas City, Arkansas.When she was five, the family moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.She graduated from Oklahoma City Central High School in 1939.In 1943, she graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Science degree.She received the L.C. Mersfelder Cup in recognition of her academic achievement as the top graduating senior.She was a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Cardinal Key, Tri Beta and Whos Who Among Students.The day after graduation she became a member of the Oklahoma City University faculty, as an instructor of mathematics to pilots. On March 1, 1944 she married Fabian Englebrit Stoppel at the First Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.Fabian was stationed at Tinker Field in Oklahoma City, serving in the Medical Corps of the US Army during WWII.Following his discharge the couple moved to Rochester, his hometown. In 1946, Fabian and his brother Raymond formed the partnership of Stoppel Feed and Seed Co. In 1952, Erwin joined his brothers in the partnership, which also included several buildings, apartments and farms.Eleanore was the accounting clerk for the business.They operated the store at 320 South Broadway until their retirement in 1974. Eleanore was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 67 years, where she was active in Womens Society, taught Sunday school, served as communion steward and Sunday school superintendent for many years.She also volunteered for many years as a Pink Lady at the Rochester Methodist Hospital.She was involved in her childrens activities, being both a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and hosting many Youth for Christ activities.Her hobbies included working crossword puzzles, knitting, counted cross stitch, making Christmas decorations for family and friends and especially making Chrismons for the Charter House tree.Eleanore and Fabian enjoyed traveling both in the US (traveling to 49 states) and Europe. Eleanore was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fabian in 1999, all of her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and 2 nephews. Eleanore is survived by her children, Gerald Corwin Stoppel (Patricia Dewey) of Saugatuck, Michigan and Beverly Madsen (Duane) of Rochester; two grandsons, Daniel (Kristina) Madsen of Plainview and David (Jessica) Madsen of Winona.Eleanore is also survived by many nieces and nephews and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 5th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Charter House (211 2nd Street NW, Rochester) with her son Father Corwin Stoppel and the Reverend Rachael Hanson, Charter House Chaplin, officiating.A private burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.
