Dr. Leone Mabel Carstensen died on April 23, 2014 at Cottagewood in Rochester, MN, at the age of 97.She was born October 20, 1916 in Plymouth County, IA where she resided until her entry in college.She was the daughter of Chris and Mabel Carstensen, northern Germany immigrants who farmed in Plymouth County, IA.In addition to her parents, a brother, George and three sisters, Sophia, Gretchen Simonsen and Anna Stark preceded her in death.She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Dr. Carstensen received her B.A. Degree from Northern Iowa University, her M.A. Degree from Northern Colorado University and her Ph.D. From the University of Arizona at Tucson.She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Lambda honorary societies. She spent 40 years in the field of education.Her career took her to Iowa, Minnesota, overseas, California and finally to the administration of a reading center at the college level. Dr. Carstensen greatly enjoyed travel.Her experiences included living and visiting in at least 70 countries.These included Europe, South America, China, the South Pacific, Far East, Middle East, Central America and the Caribbean in addition to all 50 states in the United States. Graveside services will be at 11:00am on Monday, April 28, 2014 in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, IA.
