Dorothy Mae Fredrickson Hartman of Rochester, Minnesota passed away Thursday, September1, 2016 surrounded by her family. She was born December 10, 1935 in Deronda, Wisconsin toPerry and Doris (Kraft) Fredrickson. She attended Amery High School in Amery, Wisconsin,and then the University of Wisconsin River Falls where she received her elementary teachingdegree. She met Glen Walter Hartman at River Falls when she was the Homecoming Queenrunner-up and needed a date to the dance. Dorothy and Glen were married on June 23, 1957 atTrinity Lutheran Church in Garfield Township, Wisconsin. They moved to Madison, Wisconsinwhere Dorothy taught second grade while Glen attended the University of Wisconsin School ofMedicine. After four years in Madison they moved to Baltimore, Maryland, followed byBrowning, Montana and London, England before settling in Rochester in 1968.Dorothy loved her family, gardening and chocolate. She adored her grandchildren. She believeddessert was the most important part of every meal. She found joy in setting a beautiful table.She perfected recipes for lefse, rosettes, mud pie and molasses cookies.She never turned down achocolate milkshake. She loved Disney World and visited annually with many of hergrandchildren. She learned to downhill ski in her forties when Glen decided it would be a funfamily sport. Dorothy always had a smile, a positive attitude and was happiest when she washelping others. Dorothy was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where she was the churchs firstDirector of Parish Education. She sponsored refugees, taught English as a Second Language,was president of the Alice Mayo Society, volunteered at Channel One and CommunityClothesline and was on the board of Ability Building Center. Glen and Dorothy were married 32 years when Glen passed away in 1990 at age 53. Dorothyfaced his early death with grace and strength. She began hosting the families and friends ofMayo Clinic patients facing long-term hospitalization. For fifteen years dozens of families foundlove, understanding and healing while they stayed with her as her guests. Dorothy is survived by her children: Thomas (Mary) Hartman of Rochester, MN and theirdaughter, Emily; Laura (Tracy) Thompson of Ludington, MI and their children, Miranda,Malcolm, Temple, Trent and Bruce; Robert (Jennifer) Hartman of Byron, MN and their children,Brenna, Ava and Ryan; and foreign exchange daughter Maria Sol Zurueta of Jujuy, Argentina.Also surviving are her siblings: Annis Fredrickson of New Richmond, WI; Dale (Shirley)Fredrickson of New Richmond, WI; Shirley (Ed) Churchill of Augusta, ME; and LindaFredrickson of Bloomington, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her parentsPerry and Doris; one adult brother, Larry, and three infant brothers, Donald, Duane and Glen. A celebration of Dorothys life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 atGloria Dei Lutheran Church. The family requests that memorials be directed to Channel OneRegional Food Bank.
