Doris Elmonde Nasby died Oct. 20, 2023 at age 84 while living at Riverbend Assisted Living and Memory Care in Rochester, Minnesota.
Doris was born to Arthur and Jennie (Jackson) Anderson on January 9, 1939 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She sang, played piano and became an accomplished violinist at an early age. After graduating from Washington High School in 1956 she attended Augustana College for a year before transferring to the University of Minnesota. She served as concertmaster of the orchestra, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1960 with a degree in Music and in 1961 with a degree in Education.
Doris was introduced to David Nasby while she was living in the rooming house owned by his parents. They married in 1961 and moved to Bode, IA where David taught music and Doris substitute taught and played in the Fort Dodge Symphony. In 1963, Doris gave birth to daughter Dale Ann. The family moved to Chatfield, MN and in 1965 they welcomed son Dean.
In 1969 the Nasby's moved to Rochester and lived in the same house for the next 53 years. Doris was a member of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra, played in a string quartet and other chamber ensembles, and served as organist at Our Saviors Lutheran Church for several years. Both David and Doris helped start a local concert series of the Lyra Baroque Orchestra.
She will be remembered for her intelligence and analytical skills, her eloquence and subtle sense of humor, her quest for understanding and personal growth, and her love of beauty.
Doris is survived by her husband of 62 years, David G. Nasby; children Dale Ann (Mike Sadowski) Nasby and Dean (Leah) Langby; grandchildren Demetria (Joe) Schuneman, Tatyana German, Olivia Langby and Alice Langby; and great-granddaughter Elowen Schuneman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Jennie, and her brother, Clifford Anderson.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 19 at 2:00 pm with a luncheon to follow at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester MN. Memorials may be made to a musical or charitable organization of your choice.
