ROCHESTER:Doris Joy Smith, 98, of Rochester died Thursday, November 9, 2011 at Madonna Towers Nursing Care Center where she had been a resident since 2008. Doris Joy Grimm was born on October 28, 1913 in Olivet, South Dakota.In 1917 her family moved to North Dakota where they homesteaded on land near Hurdsfield, ND.She graduated from Hurdsfield High School in 1930 and then attended Valley City Teachers College.She taught several years at country schools and then worked at the county office in Fessenden, ND.On February 4, 1942 she married Bernard Smith.They lived in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, SD.Bernard died in 1959.In 1960 Doris moved to Fargo, ND where she worked at the Fargo Forum and then at the registrar's office at North Dakota State University until she retired in 1979. She was a long time member of Faith Methodist Church in Fargo, ND and active in the library and women's ministries. In 2004 she moved to Minnesota, living in Eyota for 4 years and then in Rochester.Survivors include 2 daughters, Joy (Duane) Braaten of Mankato, MN and Kay (Richard) Meyers of Rochester; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Julia Grimm of Cedar Rapids, IA and Elaine Grimm of Moorhead, MN; and nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers; two sisters; and one brother-in-law. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Dwight LaPine officiating.Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.Burial of her cremated remains will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, South Dakota at a later date.
