Donald L. Hann

Donald L. Hann died on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at St. Marys Hospital from a stroke. Don was born in Chicago, IL on January 26, 1946 to Leon and Gladys Hann. He grew up in Michigan and Indiana. He graduated from Marion High School in 1964. He attended Ball State University in Muncie, IN, graduating in 1968. He was a member of the first class to get a degree in City planning. He served roles in local and urban planning in the states of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Utah and Idaho before becoming Executive Director of the Region 10 Planning Commission in Rochester, MN from 1979-1981. He subsequently trained with E.F. Hutton and became a registered representative in Financial Planning and Investments working first for E.F. Hutton and then with Dean Witter, Rochester, MN before establishing his own business, Donald L. Hann Investments with American Portfolios also in Rochester, MN. Don loved all sports, but his greatest passion was tennis, a sport he played in high school and college. He continued playing tennis after graduation for 30 years playing tournament tennis at the local and state level. He coached the Lourdes boys High School tennis team for a number of years passing on the torch to younger players. He enjoyed playing pick-up basketball first at the YMCA and then at the RAC. He also relished downhill ski racing, bike racing in college and lately had taken up golf. Don was a member of Rotary for twenty years and chaired the Polio Plus campaign, a successful fund raising effort to eradicate polio worldwide. He was a member of First Presbyterian church where he sang in the choir and performed solos for many years. Don is survived by his wife, Cheri; his son, Christian Hann, Minneapolis, MN; his daughter, Laura (Mark) Weerheim, Rochester, MN; his brother, Dwayne (Cyndy) Hann of Scottsdale, AZ; his nephew Brian (Cortney) of Mountain Lakes, NJ; his niece Betsy (Jon) Marlinga of Gilbert, AZ; his niece Katie (Tony) Kurth Scottsdale, AZ; his grandson Zachary Weerheim of Rochester, MN, and seven great nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 512 3rd St. SW, Rochester, MN. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Pastor Jay Rowland and Pastor TJ Parlette will be officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church, Rochester, MN. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Rochester or to the International Waldenstroms Macroglobulinemia Foundation (http://www.iwmf.com/).
