David E. Shively

David E. Shively, 83, of Rochester, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Madonna Towers. David was born July 27, 1932 in Peoria, IL to Eugene and Alice (Streibich) Shively. He was a graduate of Peoria Central High School and Bradley University in Peoria. On June 15, 1957, David married Phyllis Tate. David was a veteran of the US Army and Army Reserves, proudly serving his country in the post Korean War era. He started his sales career in 1956 with Bemis Bags before working at Chase Bags and finally retiring from Union Camp Packaging in 1994. David spent a lot of time volunteering and supporting the Rochester Public Library, Channel One Food Shelf along with the Salvation Army and he supported the Rochester Reading Center. He was heavily involved with scouts and was the Cub Master for pack #189 and a Webeloe's leader for numerous years. He loved spending his time in his rose garden or on his sailboat with his wife, Phyllis. During their retirement, David and Phyllis, traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, enjoying their time together. He was a devoted caregiver to his wife until his final days. David was very active in church throughout his life, as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester and later as a member of Rochester Covenant Church. David is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sons, Eric (Nancy) of West St. Paul, MN, Daniel (Jean) of Oakdale, MN; grandchildren, Matthew Shively and Jenna Shively and his brother, Steve (Liz) Shively of Peoria, IL. David was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Gire and by his parents, Eugene and Alice. A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00PM Monday, December 21, 2015 and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday all at the funeral home. Rev. Joel Johnson will be officiating with interment at Oakwood East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Boy Scouts of America or to the Alzheimer Association.
