CARLSON, ARLEY C. ROCHESTER, MN Arley C. Carlson, 89, of Rochester, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at St. Marys Hospital. He was born to parents Charles A. and Lydia Carlson in Virginia, MN on September 14, 1923.He attended Virginia, MN public schools and graduated from Virginia High School in 1941.He played American Legion Baseball in Virginia and the city team in the Iron Range League.He played hockey in the Iron Range League and also with Eveleth.He was a pitcher for the Duluth Dukes in the Northern League in 1946 which was a farm team for the St. Louis Cardinals. Arley went on to play hockey for Baltimore, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Philadelphia in the Eastern Hockey League.He played for the Dallas Texans in the United States Hockey League, Houston Skippers, and San Diego Skyhawks in the Pacific Coast League.He then played for the Louisville Blades before coming to Rochester, MN in 1949-1960 for the Rochester Mustangs.He was a player-coach for 2 years with the Mustangs. Arley was past president of the Rochester Youth Hockey Association, conducted hockey schools, and coached youth hockey.He was also honored as being Rochesters Mr. Hockey, and his jersey, #9, was retired.He was inducted into the Quarterbacks Hall of Fame in 2000. Arley enjoyed making skating rinks in the back yards of his home.The first one was made before his own children could use it, but the neighborhood children had a great time. In 1951, Arley started his career with State Farm Insurance Co.s.He retired in 1993 at the age of 70. Arley was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 35 years.He served as a deacon, a trustee, and served on stewardship committee.In recent years, he attended First Baptist/Autumn Ridge Church.An important part of Arleys life was visiting Matthew Schoen, a very close friend. Arley married Agnes (Aggie) Wuollet on May 1, 1948.They have three children, Keith (Sally) Carlson, Connie Thomsen, and Denise Long; six grandchildren, Leah, Jeffrey, Katie, Scott, Danika, and Jordan; and four great grandchildren, Taylor, Ryan, Connor, and Aden He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Denise; two sisters; and six brothers. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Autumn Ridge Church, 3611 Salem Rd SW, with the Reverend C. John Steer officiating.A visitation will be from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.Burial will take place this spring in Oakwood Cemetery.Memorials are suggested to Rochester Youth Hockey and Autumn Ridge Church.
