Arlene K. Newman, 87, of Rochester passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Seasons Hospice House in Rochester. Arlene Kutner was born on September 30, 1929 in New York City, NY to Jack and Mildred Kutner. As a child, Arlene had theprivilegeof having lunch with Eleanor Roosevelt. She attended Hunter College in New York. On March 22, 1952, Arlene married Maurice Newman in New York. At age 50 she learned to drive and completed a PhD in Sociology The couple lived in Brooklyn all of their life until moving to Rochester in 2007. Maurice died in January of 2008. Arlene worked for MayoClinic in the Simulation Unit where she was the oldest simulated patient. She specialized in pretending she was delirious. She enjoyed politics, cooking and traveling to Scotland. She is survived by her son James (Cathy) Newman of Rochester; daughter Roberta (Ed Grupsmith) Newman of Brooklyn, NY; six grandchildren, Marya, Evan, Eric, Emily, Elliott, and Edie; and a great-granddaughter, Ada. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Maurice, and dog Cholmondeley. A memorial service to celebrate life will be heldat 5:00 PM Sunday,March12, 2017 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester.
