Alvin Hrstka

Alvin James Hrstka, 81 Alvin James Hrstka was born March 25, 1933 in Cresco, Iowa to Fred and Mary (Urban) Hrstka. He attended Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minnesota until he enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 15, 1950.He served in California, Alabama, and at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, England, and earned Honorable Discharge on July 20, 1954. Alvin married Sharon Bern on November 17, 1956 at The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi in Rochester.Sharon passed away in 2008.The Hrstkas made their home in Chester before moving to Pine Island, where Alvin worked for the Highway Department and began farming.In 1967, they moved to their farm south of Chatfield, Minnesota, where they raised their five children.Alvin enjoyed spending time with his cows, tractors, and grandchildren. He also liked having a good piece of pie and going to auctions. He is survived by his brother, Don; children, Tom, Lorrie (Schuchard), Ron, Jim, and Steve; grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and four brothers. Private family burial is planned for a later date.In lieu of memorials, donations to the State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN are preferred. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes.
