Allen Jay Paulson, 84, of Rochester, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013, at St. Marys Hospital.Allen was born January 21, 1929, to Nicholas and Beulah (Clow) Paulson in Minneapolis, Minn.He was raised in Dresser, Wisc., Spooner, Wisc., and St. Paul, Minn. where he graduated from Murray High School.He then attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied Civil Engineering.Following his college studies, Allen enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War with an Army Engineer Unit.Upon discharge from the Army, Allen resumed employment with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, holding positions in Austin and Albert Lea.Allen married Mary Ann Scovill on February 20, 1960, in St. Paul.Mary Ann died on July 19, 2009.The family moved to Rochester in 1964, where Allen continued in his career as a Right-of-Way Engineer with the Department of Transportation, retiring in 1994.Allen enjoyed post-retirement self-employment as a land acquisition consultant until August 2011.Allen enjoyed staying abreast of current events, reading five daily newspapers and many periodicals.He had been involved in Rochester Youth Hockey as a hockey dad and a manager of traveling youth hockey teams. Allen is survived by sons James (Debra), Charles (Tami), and John, all of Rochester; daughters Susan (Scott) Proudfit of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Barbara Paulson (David Klepaida) of Cottage Grove, Minn.; grandchildren Emma, Abigail, and Evan Proudfit; and Nick and Alex Paulson; and sister, June Ordal of Battle Lake, Minn.In addition to his wife, his parents preceded him in death.The family would like to thank the staff at Mayo Clinic, St. Marys Hospital, Samaritan Bethany, and Golden Living East for your compassionate care and loving ministry to Allens physical and spiritual needs.Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, July 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Pax Christi Catholic Church in Rochester, with Fr. James Russell officiating. Visitation will be at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes (18th Ave and 55th St NW) on Tuesday, July 2, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church, one hour prior to Mass on Wednesday, July 3.In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to Mayo Clinic Poverello Fund.
