Allan J. D. Dale, MD, 75, of Rochester, died Friday, July 15, 2011 at his residence after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. Allan Dale was born October 22, 1935 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada to David and Erma (McLean) Dale. He graduated from Central Collegiate High School in Regina and completed his undergraduate schooling at Regina College, University of Saskatchewan and the University of Manitoba.He received his Medical Degree from the University of Manitoba Medical College in 1959. Allan received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in May 1959.Allan came to the Mayo Clinic in 1961 as a fellow in Neurology.He became an Assistant to the Staff in Neurology in 1964 and was a Consultant in Neurology from 1965 until his retirement in 2009.Allan was Head of Section, Department of Neurology from 1976 until 1985.He was Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology atMayo Medical School from 1977 until 2009.He was a member of the Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases at the Mayo Clinic from 1994 until 2009.Allan was board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the Licentiate Medical Council of Canada.His extramural practice included Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, AZ, Geneva, Switzerland, and Bahrain.His intramural activities included numerous committee appointments at the Mayo Clinic.Allan was very proud of his membership in the Society of Clinical Neurologists where he served as President for a year, and presented on topics in Neurology at Society meetings.Allan was also proud of his invitation to present on stroke prevention at the University of Pau, France.Research endeavorsincluded radiation induced carotid artery disease.Allan was author and co-author of numerous publications. Allan was an accomplished violinist, playing a violin that was given to him at age 7 by his mother.He played with the Winnipeg Symphony at 17 years of age and, after moving to Rochester, he joined the Rochester Symphony.In later years, Allan loved playing for many church services in the Rochester area.And also played for numerous celebrations, weddings and funerals. Allan was very proud of his Canadian heritage and often returned to his home in Saskatchewan.He was very fond of the outdoors and loved to fish and hunt. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann, of Rochester; five children, David Dale of Baltimore, MD, Dr. Scott Dale (Andy)of Flagstaff, AZ, Robert (Carolyn) Grace of Lucan, Ontario, Canada, Michael Grace of San Francisco, CA, and Gina (Jeff) Brick of East Lansing, MI; and seven grandchildren, Kevin, Mark, Leah, Ryan, Matthew, Tyler, and Elizabeth.He was preceded in death by his parents. A Funeral Mass will be held at10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Saint John The Evangelist Catholic Church, 415 - 1st Street SW with the Rev. Msgr. Gerald Mahon officiating. A visitation will be from 5:00 8:00 pm. on Monday, July 18, 2011 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes with one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester. The family would like to express their deepest thanks to Dr. Gary Crogan and the Oncology Nurses at Mayo and the Methodist Hospital. As well as to Seasons Hospice, in particular Mary. Allan was the love of Dorothy's life, her best friend and he will be so greatly missed.
