ROCHESTER:Alan W. McTavish, 74, of Rochester, MN passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center, MN. Alan Wade McTavish was born October 30, 1939 to Robert and Bernice (Break) McTavish in London, Ontario, Canada. Alan graduated from RCC Institute of Technology in Toronto, Canada with a degree in electronic engineering in 1964.He started work for IBM in Toronto Canada in 1966as a computer engineer.Alan was transferred to IBM Rochester in 1979 for a three year project where he worked in software development.In 1982 he transferred to a permanent position at IBM Rochester and worked there until his retirement from IBM in 1993.Alancontinued to work as a software developer after his retirement from IBM when he hired on as a consultant for Analyst International Corporation in 1995. It was during this time that he met his wife Judy and they married in 2001.Alan retired from AiC in 2006 and he and his wife Judy spent their retirement traveling by RV across the U.S.Alan loved bird watching, wood carving, camping, fishing, kayaking and sailing. Alan is survived by his wife, Judy; two sons, Michael ofAlberta, Canada, James ofAlberta, Canada; daughter, Christine Niro ofOntario, Canada; 3 step children, Patricia Badger of Mantorville, MN; Michael Tapanila of St. Paul, Mn, Brian Tapanila of Red Wing, MN; two brothers, Dan and Grant; and a sister, Ruth Barlow;13 grandchildren. Private family services will be at a later date.
