Adeline Addie Joan (Roth) Matson, 81, died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at her home in Rochester. Addie was born on the family farm on Feb. 3, 1933 in Utica, Minn. to George and Adella (Rupprecht) Roth. Her elementary school education was received at Utica Public Schools and her middle school education at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Lewiston, Minn., where she was confirmed. Addie graduated from St. Charles, Minn. High School in 1951 and attended Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. for one and one-half years before returning to Utica to care for her mother before she passed away in 1955. Addie married Marlowe Mike Matson of Rochester, Minn. on Sept. 24, 1955 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Lewiston. Together they moved to Rockford, Ill. and on to Minneapolis, Minn. before returning to Rochester in 1959 where they owned and operated Matson Drywall for 25 years, with Addie serving as secretary/ bookkeeper. Addie also worked at Roberts Clothing in downtown Rochester from 1987 to 1992. Addie was a wonderful, positive, loving woman who gave so much of herself and her life to her family, friends and the Lord. She became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester in 1959. She was an active member, assisting with childrens choir, Sunday School and helping in the kitchen on a regular basis as part of the funeral committee. Addies grandchildren were her greatest joy. She cared for each of the four of them early on and was always an active part of their lives. She enjoyed travel, puzzles, flower and vegetable gardening and tending to her raspberry bushes and African violets, dancing, bowling and bird watching and feeding. Addie loved her time in the kitchen, showing her love to others with her gift of cooking and baking by passing on her creations and her skills to others. Addie is survived by three children, Michael (Catherine) Matson of Decaturville, Tenn.; Jill (Dana) Piens of Rochester; and Marne (Chris) Gade of Rochester; four grandchildren Joshua Piens, Katie Piens, Mitchel Gade and Meredith Gade; andher two sisters, Evelyn Hilke of Winona, Minn. and Bernice Cone of Denver, Colo. Addie is preceded in death by her husband, Mike; two sisters Dorothy Henry, St. Charles, Minn. and Irene Antonson, Utica, Minn. A funeral service to celebrate Addies life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester, with the Pastor Joel Haak officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church. Internment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Mayo Clinic Hospice.
