A. Worrell Mal Malcomson, 92, died on May 22nd, 2015 at Cottagewood Senior Community where he had resided for three months. Mal was born March 16, 1923 on a farm outside of LeRoy, Minnesota to Alden Malcomson and Florence Erb.He attended a rural one room school and then graduated from LeRoy High School in 1941. In 1942, he joined the Army Air Corp and served as an airplane mechanic in the Philippines during WWII.After the war, Mal attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1950 he married Betty Barlow of Preston.That same year, the couple moved to Chicago, IL where Mal started his career with IBM as a field engineer.In 1962 they moved to Rochester where he continued to work for IBM as an electrical engineer until his retirement in 1986. Mals family and his career at IBM were important parts of his life.He also enjoyed time with his friends, working in his yard, tinkering on projects at home, and car rallies.In retirement, the Golden K Kiwanis were a source of great camaraderie and support.He spent many hours volunteering with them and dedicated much of his time to his wife in her final years. Mal is survived by one son, Kent (Nanette) of Minneapolis; one daughter, Dee (Erik) Voldal of Rochester; and grandchildren Emily and Thomas of Rochester.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brother, David. The family would like to thank the staff at Shorewood, where Mal lived happily for over four years, and the staff at Cottagewood for their compassion and care in his final months. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Rochester or Mayo Clinic Hospice. There will be no formal memorial service, but the family invites you to join them on Friday, May 29, 2015 for a visitation and to share memories between 11:00 and 1:00 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home.Burial will follow in the Pine Island Cemetery.
